Why This Is the Most Personal Project of My Career

After more than 30 years of making music with Go Fish—writing songs, touring the country, and creating resources for kids—you’d think I would’ve seen it all. But this book… this one is different.

A Broken Crayon is, without question, the most personal project I’ve ever worked on.

It’s not just a book. It’s my story—wrapped in rhythm and rhyme, beautifully illustrated, and designed for children… but carrying a message that speaks to all of us. It’s about brokenness, resilience, identity, and creativity. It’s about how what feels broken doesn’t have to be discarded. It can be reshaped into something new.

This message came from my own experience. I know what it feels like to be burned out. To be tired of pretending. To wonder if the cracks in your story make you less valuable. I believed those lies for too long. But when I finally got honest about my struggles, that’s when everything started to change.

And now, to take that story and turn it into something kids can understand? That’s the kind of project that makes every challenge worth it.

Working with Jan Dolby, creating the music video, and hearing from teachers and parents who’ve already been impacted by the message has confirmed something deep in my heart: This book matters.

I truly believe A Broken Crayon is going to open doors—not just in schools, but in conversations between adults and children everywhere.
