The Broken Crayon Author Visit Experience

Jamison Statema is a Dove Award–winning songwriter, national speaker, and founder of Go Fish. He brings a high-energy, music-infused, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)–focused author visit designed especially for elementary students — with a special focus on K–2.

Storytime with a Twist
I’ll kick things off by reading my book, A Broken Crayon—a story full of color, heart, and hope. Then we’ll dive into a lively, hands-on conversation using the same discussion questions included in the book.

Music Brings the Book to Life
Next, I’ll grab my ukulele and sing the original song that inspired the book—while we watch the music video where the illustrations jump right off the page!

Take Home the Story
Finally, everyone who pre-orders the book will get their very own signed copy of A Broken Crayon. Order on this page for special pricing on this beautifully illustrated, hardcover book!

I can’t wait to share this unforgettable experience with you. See you soon!

Frequently asked questions

A Broken Crayon author visits are designed especially for elementary students, with Kindergarten–2nd grade being the sweet spot.

That said, the presentation is flexible and easily adapted, and I’m happy to work with schools in a few different ways:

  • Pre-K – Shortened, highly interactive visits with simple language and visuals

  • K–2 – Ideal age range for the story, discussion, and activities

  • 3rd–5th grade – Adjusted content that focuses more on creativity, resilience, and storytelling

If you’re unsure whether your grade level is a good fit, I’m always happy to help you think through what would work best for your students.

Absolutely!

We will provide custom, ready-to-send parent emails along with printable handouts.  These will include a QR code that gives details about the visit, along with a link to order the book at a discount.

Books will be brought directly to the event, so there are no shipping costs either!

Jamison will also create a custom video for your school about his visit, and teachers will be given resources like downloadable coloring sheets and more!

A Broken Crayon author visits are designed to support social-emotional learning (SEL) and student well-being in an age-appropriate, school-friendly way.

The presentation is faith-neutral and focuses on universal themes commonly emphasized in elementary education, including:

  • Emotional awareness and expression

  • Resilience and coping with mistakes or setbacks

  • Self-worth, confidence, and creativity

  • Empathy, kindness, and respect for others

  • Positive decision-making and problem-solving

The session uses storytelling, discussion, and interactive moments to help students reflect on how challenges can be reframed as opportunities for growth.

Content is adapted by grade level and can be aligned to a school’s existing SEL framework or character education goals. Visits are appropriate for public schools, private schools, and homeschool co-ops, and are structured to meet district expectations for age-appropriate, inclusive programming.

No religious instruction or faith-based messaging is included in public-school presentations.

Yes—A Broken Crayon author visits work very well for private schools and homeschool co-ops, and each visit can be tailored to fit the values and goals of your community.

My background includes decades of work in faith-based spaces through Go Fish, along with prior engagements and partnerships with organizations such as the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Focus on the Family. I’m also a Dove Award–winning songwriter and have written music for projects connected to VeggieTales and artists like Kirk Franklin.

For classroom-based author visits, the presentation centers on the book and focuses on themes like resilience, creativity, emotional awareness, and character development.

For schools or co-ops that would prefer a chapel service or larger assembly, that option is available as well. Chapel presentations are booked separately from the author visit and are typically structured as a speaking engagement with a set fee, rather than being supported through book sales. Faith elements can be fully integrated in these settings if desired.

Every visit—whether classroom-based or chapel-style—is customized in advance, so the format, tone, and content are clear and aligned with your expectations.
